What a birth chart is — the legend and the astronomy
A birth chart (or natal chart) is a photograph of the sky at the instant and place you were born: where the Sun, the Moon, and the planets stood as seen from Earth, and which sign was climbing over the eastern horizon at that minute — your rising sign, or ascendant. It predicts nothing. It is a portrait, and portraits are good for exactly one thing: looking at yourself.
People who look up their chart today almost never want fortune-telling. They want a mirror with structure — a way to ask "why do I work this way?" with old names and good questions. That is what this calculator is for. It hands you the portrait in seconds; the reading is yours (and, if you want, the bruxo's).
The legend comes from far back: the Babylonians were already carving the sky into twelve houses more than two thousand years ago, and medieval apothecaries read sky and body together — they said each sign kept watch over one part: Aries the head, Pisces the feet. It is declared tradition. Beautiful, ancient, and not science.
The positions, though — those are real astronomy: they are computed with ephemerides and published algorithms (Meeus for Sun and Moon, Schlyter for the planets — the same ones this page uses, with an error under 0.01° for Sun and Moon). What you need to calculate your birth chart
Three things, nothing more:
- Your full date — day, month, and year. That alone gives you the Sun, the Moon, and the planets.
- Your birth time — as exact as you can get it. In the US it is usually printed on your birth certificate; it is worth digging up the paper before guessing.
- Your city — the rising sign depends on the point on Earth the sky was seen from. If your city is not on the list, choose "another city" and type latitude, longitude, and UTC offset.
Without the time, the calculator does not abandon you: Sun and Moon come out all the same, because they depend only on the date. What stays out is the rising sign and the hour organ — and it is honest that they stay out: inventing a time is inventing a chart.
Why the time matters: 4 minutes move your rising sign
The Earth turns 360 degrees in about 24 hours. Do the math: one degree every four minutes. The rising sign — the sign climbing over the horizon — changes sign, on average, every two hours. Four minutes of difference already move the degree; half an hour can change the entire sign that rises.
That is why two people born on the same day in the same city can have charts with such different faces: the sky was the same, but the horizon was not. It is also why daylight saving time fools so many calculators — the clock on the wall was lying about the sky by a whole hour.
I have seen people find out from the certificate that they were born at 4:17, not "around five" — and the whole rising sign changed. So I treat the time the way I treat a remedy: exact dose or nothing.
