What a moon sign is

Your moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the Moon was travelling through at the moment you were born. The Moon is the fastest body on the chart: it covers roughly thirteen degrees a day and changes sign about every two and a half days. That's why your moon sign isn't shared by everyone who has your birthday — only by those born inside that two-day-and-a-bit window.

In the astrological tradition, if the Sun is what you do and the ascendant is how you walk in, the Moon is how you react: what you feel before you reason, what calms you down, what you do when nobody is watching. It's the sign that the people you live with know far better than your colleagues do.

Ancient treatises placed the Moon on the side of night, memory and the mother — the body of what is received rather than what is conquered. Medieval astrology had it ruling the tides of the body and of the mood, and that's where words like “lunatic” came from: someone who changed with the Moon. Declared tradition, not physiology.

The Moon's position, on the other hand, is hard astronomy: this page uses the Meeus series, with error under 0.01° in ecliptic longitude. What science does not support is the claim that the phase or the moon sign alters your behaviour: reviews looking for lunar effects on sleep and psychiatric admissions found no consistent effect. Because the Moon changes sign every two and a half days, there's a real chance (around fifteen per cent of days) that the change falls precisely on your birthday. What is a moon sign and how is it different from a sun sign?

The moon sign is the sign the Moon was passing through when you were born. The sun sign depends only on the date and describes where you're heading; the moon sign changes every two and a half days and describes how you feel and how you settle.

Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?

Usually yes: the date is enough. The exception is a day when the Moon changed sign — around fifteen per cent of days. In that case the calculator shows both signs and asks for your hour instead of choosing for you.

Why does the Moon change sign so quickly?

Because it's the closest body to Earth: it covers about thirteen degrees of zodiac a day and completes the circle in roughly twenty-seven and a half days. The Sun, by comparison, spends a month per sign.

Does the Moon really affect my sleep?

Tradition says it does; the evidence is weak and inconsistent. What is measured is that regular timing and morning light affect your rest. That's why we keep the two inks apart and never blend them.
